Guided Fly Fishing Trips and Tutorials
I still guide fly fishers on the South Platte River the same way I’ve guided them for the past 15 years, although I do limit the number of trips I take out each season.
Guided Fly Fishing Trips

Colorado’s South Platte River tailwaters are known as some of the most technically challenging in the country. Trout are famous for selectively feeding to very small flies. Each season I offer a limited number of guided fishing trips for experienced fly fishers who are looking to improve their tailwater fly fishing game. Whenever possible, emphasis is placed on fishing small dry flies to rising trout. Advanced dead–drift or freestyle nymphing tactics are taught. The goal of every trip is a day of high quality fly fishing to very challenging trout.
These trips are limited to one or two anglers. All trips are a full day on the river. A simple streamside lunch is provided. Flies, leaders and tippet are supplied.
Bamboo fly rod enthusiasts are welcome!

Fly Fishing Tutorials

I think on-the-water experience is the best way for beginning and intermediate fly fishers to improve their skills. My tutorials focus on skill development and improvement rather than just catching fish — although we never forget that catching a trout is the ultimate goal. I emphasize observing the trout and the water to gain tactical insights. That may mean reading the water in the morning and then working to improve dead drift nymphing skills. Later in the day a hatch of insects may dictate a switch to dry fly tactics. Special emphasis is always placed on learning “fishing” casts while we’re on the water. These casts are designed for making drag-free and natural fly presentations. Not all of them are pretty or long like you see on the casting ponds at the fly fishing shows, but these are the casts you’ll need to catch trout. And the best place to learn them in on the river.
Fly fishing tutorials are conducted on the demanding South Platte River tailwaters where small flies and special techniques useful for successfully fishing most tailwaters and spring creeks are taught. For anglers who prefer a less technical, small stream experience tutorials are available on the free–flowing, meadow waters of the South Platte’s headwaters.
One–half day and full day trips are available.
